  • Uphill work to get conscious this morning, but I have the part time job orientation -- unpaid, BTW-- this morning that I'd better hurry to.
  • Back from orientation, which was all about safety, safety, safety, Spam, and safety. I was not the oldest nor the only female. Not bad!

This is the temporary holiday driver's helper job with UPS, which if it doesn't get too physically tiring should move fast & furious, which if I can't have an intellectually rigorous job will at least keep me moving.  UPS seems like a fair company, to judge from the way they treated us temps.

Oh, and it turns out that orientation is paid, too -- now that's more than I expected, right there.  I'm assigned to the group that works within 5 miles of here, so I shouldn't have to travel far to meet up with the drivers.  But it's not guaranteed I'll get hours every day, though since there's a certain amount of expected attrition among the helpers, if you stick around and are reliable, you'll get work.

If nothing else, it should be An Experience.

  • Back to teaching myself PHP, which is rather untyped & wild-west-style lawless, rather like discovering that pro racers use training wheels

It's just that after learning rigorous typing for C# and especially Java, going back to PHP and realizing that you don't have to declare if something is a string or a number is... oddly disappointing.  Cats and dogs living together! Luxury!

  • You know what? I forgot to call the school to go get my Actual Certificate for the programming course today....

It was supposed to come in last week, I called and stopped by twice, guy promised to call me when it was in (he SAID that he was given a package tracking number) and looked so honest when he said it.

The important thing is, my "certificate" is official, I just don't have the physical document.  But I'd like it anyway, ys know?

  • Almost #Heroes time. I may be the only person still watching, but I love evil carnivals.
  • #Heroes might just have the best Thanksgiving episode since Buffy's Yam Sham.

I never expected a "Thanksgiving" episode from this show, but if they'd been doing this sort of thing more along the way, there'd be more interest in it for sure.  Three families, three awkward family gatherings.  Plus, Mr. Muggles has a girlfriend!  With a pink bow! Yam jokes! Fainting guests! Exes bringing new love interests!

  • 19:35 Was an hour late to class, but they were doing basic Intro To Java that I already know, so good timing.... #

SO not the way to start a morning, but at least the furnace started the first time, and stayed on. It would be much more convenient, not to mention economical, if it would just limp through the rest of the heating season, until sometime say in the summer, when presumably I have a job, so that replacing it doesn't involve quite as much physical and financial hardship.

Of course, I took pictures, both for my own reference (yes, I will write up an illustrated instruction sheet) and just cause it makes it more of an Interesting Experience if you share it with others.

(That's one of the great things about having a blog or journal, because it lets me step back sometimes and be more analytical about a situation or event, even as it's going on. Never Run Towards A Fire applies here, too.)

The snow, it snowed all the day long, and was still snowing when I went off to class, late (because I waited until the instructor emailed me back saying that yes, class was ON) and was probably about 10 inches total, except that it was extremely dry, so it practically BLEW off the car.

Class is now on a bonus module, instead of starting up a new sequence. Because there was a change in instructors last year, a bunch of the curriculum was slighted or skipped, so we've got 36 class hours (about 3 weeks worth) devoted to recapping the middle modules. Which is fine by me, I can use the refresher, because those are the ones that I'm still Incomplete on.

Came home, watched Heroes, which kept my interest -- noticed that Eric Laneuville was directing, and he's good. Also for once they came up with an appealing male lead for Claire... and found an excuse for an Underwater Kiss/Buddy Breathing scene, which amused me no end, given my Due South love.

  • 17:58 Waiting for class to begin, ah education how I've missed you! Tonight more ADO.NET and web services! #
  • 21:57 End of class! Home to Heroes and/or sleeping deeply.... #

I made it through Heroes, but only just, and then wondered why I bothered, because it was a bit of letdown after a promising start last week -- especially because it seems the female characters are getting marginalized. Bryan Fuller can't come back soon enough!

But I was too tired from evening class and interview-related stress to fall asleep anyway, so at least complaining to myself about what was happening on the screen kept me busy.

The interview wasn't any big thing in and of itself -- I mostly had to show up and look like I was employable, really. I was surprised that they make you fill out a whole bunch of paperwork first, including IRS withholding and so on, but then they're a Professional organization. Guy was more hopeful about finding me Notes work, which under the circumstances I'll do, because they just don't handle many .NET junior developer slots.

However, a guy in my evening class just landed one of those jobs, and he's no more experienced at .NET than I am, so they ARE out there....

Getting to the damn interview was perhaps the most stressful part of the whole day, since I printed out a Google Map way too small (I wasn't sure which T station I was going to use) and there were not only all these unmarked streets, but the cross-street I had to take had a completely different name than the map's. So I wandered like an increasingly stressed tumbleweed through the concrete canyons.

The office itself was up on the 20th floor of a waterfront building, with an AMAZINGLY good view of Logan Airport across the bay, and big ships at the edge of the horizon. I totally forget sometimes that I'm about 2-3 miles, tops, from the ocean as I sit here typing.

Had a pretty good day school-wise in both courses, learned a couple things for my Illustrator projects, a lot about Lists and linked list arrays in C#, even if the class goes past 10 most nights because the instructor is good, but long-winded.

But then I get home and the TiVo has failed to record Heroes, and the torrents aren't up yet even and I'm sad.

Even though I probably shouldn't stay up to watch it anyhow. :: drums little feet on the floor and holds breath :: Somehow that doesn't make me feel all that much better. I shall dutifully slink off to bed anyway, with just one more quick survey to see if a torrent is up already....

Gummi Bears in Atlantis... another feral vid. This one is a bit jerky, at least playing on my computer, but it's worth it for a theme song that the show really really should use. (Warning: I see quite a bit of footage from late S3, though I don't think you'll get much in the way of plot points from it)

I've also spent my morning reading up a bit on the pygmy rabbits just released back into the wild in Washington State. I think the problem really is that they're just. too. cute. to. live. No, seriously.

(The kicker is that originally they didn't breed well, which is un-rabbitlike in the extreme, but biologists think that they had ended up too inbred, so crossed them over with a related species from Idaho, and now they're, well, breeding like rabbits again.)

My ongoing struggle with a working AVI file for Heroes Ep 17 still goes on. I can only find one on the torrents with a coding that is "xVid-FPN" and I just can't run it -- not just with Quicktime, but also ever-trusty VLC and DIVx Player. Feh.
