Feb 9 -- Interview Day

From my current Twitter stream:

  • 06:48 great phrase: squeezes the nickel until the buffalo roars #
  • 10:36 Found old dark blue wool suit which is still in good condition, but skirt waist is too tight. New suit will do, however. #
  • 12:12 off to a contracting firm job interview, wish me luck! #
  • 15:22 Back from interview. I think the guy thinks I'm going to be a hard sell, but we'll see, won't we? #
  • 17:58 Waiting for class to begin, ah education how I've missed you! Tonight more ADO.NET and web services! #
  • 21:57 End of class! Home to Heroes and/or sleeping deeply.... #

I made it through Heroes, but only just, and then wondered why I bothered, because it was a bit of letdown after a promising start last week -- especially because it seems the female characters are getting marginalized. Bryan Fuller can't come back soon enough!

But I was too tired from evening class and interview-related stress to fall asleep anyway, so at least complaining to myself about what was happening on the screen kept me busy.

The interview wasn't any big thing in and of itself -- I mostly had to show up and look like I was employable, really. I was surprised that they make you fill out a whole bunch of paperwork first, including IRS withholding and so on, but then they're a Professional organization. Guy was more hopeful about finding me Notes work, which under the circumstances I'll do, because they just don't handle many .NET junior developer slots.

However, a guy in my evening class just landed one of those jobs, and he's no more experienced at .NET than I am, so they ARE out there....

Getting to the damn interview was perhaps the most stressful part of the whole day, since I printed out a Google Map way too small (I wasn't sure which T station I was going to use) and there were not only all these unmarked streets, but the cross-street I had to take had a completely different name than the map's. So I wandered like an increasingly stressed tumbleweed through the concrete canyons.

The office itself was up on the 20th floor of a waterfront building, with an AMAZINGLY good view of Logan Airport across the bay, and big ships at the edge of the horizon. I totally forget sometimes that I'm about 2-3 miles, tops, from the ocean as I sit here typing.

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck with your interviews. =>}
