October 11-12: TV and other stuff....

  • Part of a dream last night was descending a tiled utility staircase that gradually got fancier towards the bottom, all elaborate & colorful.

Occasionally I remember enough details of one of my visual-heavy dreams to note.  This one had me going down a long utility stairway, like those in hotels that only get better appurtenances near ground level, so that we went from bare concrete blocks to white tiles, to colorful tiles (and patterned tiles on the floor) to all out geometric designs and bas relief wings (in deep red) across the walls.

  • Will go to see The Informant! this afternoon. Dizzy with the prospect of seeing Two Actual Movies in a month....
  • Alas, it turns out that the local theatre doesn't have a holiday matinĂ©e! Stupid half-assed holiday....

Ah well, the opportunity will come again.  At least it got me dressed and out of the house.

  • TiVo support just basically admitted it can't fix my subscription issue, I have to wait for new TiVo to arrive. Feh.

And I was so proud of myself for some Googling to find out how to fix the second remote so it pointed at the second (non-working, mostly) TiVo to be able to get the service number off it.  Note to self: I need to schedule a Comcast call next week to get a 'cable card' installed in the new TiVo, which will then be able to record two shows at once and also, not have to have the cable box taking up space in the shelves.

Not to mention all the other Series 3 functionality, like being able to watch Netflix movies on demand and all that.  Cool stuff!  New tech toys!  Reason to live until Thursday!

  • Heroes actually entertained me tonight. Large #s of women having major roles in plot certainly didn't hurt.

Also, Nathan!Sylar having much of Teh Angst and Emo Bangs.  (And now he's run off to join a very VERY sinister circus).  But anyway, it's amazing how much a show improves when female characters have stuff to do beyond being Love Props.  Even the plot with the deaf woman (Emma -- yes, I can remember her name, which is a good sign) is about her discovery and her reactions, with some incipient romance to sweeten it, not the point of it.

  • Kept waking up aching, but was too groggy to get up and take something for it, like any sane awake person would have. Feh.
  • My TiVo still believes that it doesn't have a valid subscription - I was hoping they'd have fixed it up overnight on their side.
  • Whoo! Finally finished Slactivist's page-by-page critique of Left Behind. So worth it!! Now watching pieces of the movie with his guidance.

Once again, thank you to all my friends who have in the past suggested this for perusal.  I feel educated, not just about 'literary' values, but about current theology, Bible translations, and so on, with The Slactivist putting into words more than I could possibly why some of the Evangelical posturing really really skeeves me out and makes me want to yell "Heretic" from the top of my agnostic lungs.

  • Time for The Amazing Race... if it isn't running behind because of the hated foot-ball sports game thingies.

Oh, that has to be one of the saddest ever eliminations in the series history, particularly because they won the leg fair and square, and in general had seemingly a good chance based on their abilities and team bond to go all the way.  But yeah, I expect the reason that this is a game first and foremost has something to do with the Emmys this show wins AND my ability to stay entertained by it alone of the major 'reality' series out there.

  • Stay classy, Don Draper. #madmen.

And oh, the episode of Mad Men almost immediately thereafter -- in which a large number of characters didn't get what they wanted and acted out badly because of it, the most heartbreaking being poor closeted Sal getting canned because a nasty drunk client came onto him, and then childishly demands he be fired.  And Don, who is very unhappy with his own current situations, does just that.  And then Don starts an affair which has Doesn't End Well written all over it with his daughter's teacher.
