Reston the Rooster
Jul. 21st, 2004 12:16 pmI got a little too caught up in my morning dose of Six Feet Under -- I'm going through the DVDs of S1 at the rate of one or so a day, in the morning when I'm playing computer solitaire/catching up online/eating breakfast. I really should be spacing them out more, because I'll be through too soon this way (I blazed through S1 of Dead Like Me in less than a week) but they're very pleasant indeed.
So I left late, and what if I don't run into the woman with the chicken down the street -- she said she notices me looking for him every time I go by, and he'd just been wandering past... it turned out he had wandered up the stairs and into his house, so he was fetched out and introduced. :-)
His name is Reston the Rooster, and he looks to be fairly tame, inasmuch as he doesn't have a flock or anything so he looks to the humans for company. He kicks up a big fuss every time he sees a hawk overhead and is in general a pretty good watch-chicken, albeit one that weighs two pounds and whose main attack would be fluttering and squawking loudly. He's definitely some sort of fancy bantam breed, with glossy black feathers and a bright red comb and wattle, and mad beady little chicken eyes. He's got spurs, too, about two inches long and fairly lethal-looking.
They have, however, caught him killing a small garter snake, so I guess he's trying to be Big Macho Boss Chicken.
We talked a little about the wild animals around the neighborhood -- they say there are groundhogs in the slope above the railroad cut!
The goodness of the morning was topped off by running into
ellenbs on the subway -- which would have been even better if I hadn't noticed her after three or four stops! In my defence, the train was pretty crowded, which means I didn't get to sit and write (though I got two pages done on the Green Line portion of the trip), but still -- I was just about 15 feet from her. I guess I need to look up more often.
Writing on the subway is working out terrifically for me -- I've got about 40 pages done now, with the two I added this morning. I have no idea how many words this works out to, or how many pages it would be in MS form. I need to start transcribing this in the evening, I have a feelign that it will actually fluff up as I restate sentences that sounded good when I was scrawling away like a mad thing on a swaying subway seat.
(I don't have a chicken icon, I'll just have to go with the emu....)
