On Vox: ::blows off the dust::

Currently, 2009 could be starting out better -- Mom has developed a regurgitant murmur that led to pulmonary hypertension, as well as serious swelling in her extremities and gut.  They're unable to do much about the murmur because of her age (87!) but they're treating her with diuretics which are proceeding pretty well, so I'll be able to leave her side in PA soon.

Except that I've come down with a really good case of stomach flu, so have spent the entire day in bed while my brother runs around after Mom.  I haven't had flu in YEARS... forgotten how bad it can be.

So, 2009 starts with me unemployed, Mom sick and me sick too.  That leaves us nowhere to go but up, right?

Gad, that sucks. Maybe you're getting the crappy part of the year over with now, and the rest will be smooth sailing!

She really is steadily improving since I've been here -- even the difference between yesterday and today is so very striking. We've gotten her into TED hose, the diuretics are doing their work, she actually has a bit of appetite again (the internal gut swelling made her feel always full, plus gave her indigestion if she ate too much). We're still going through with home services getting set up, but I'm betting they'll annoy her so much that she'll get better out of spite.

It takes a lot of stubborn to make it to 86+.

Get well soon, both of you. I've been home from work all week having an abscess repeatedly drained - also not much fun. Frankly I'd rather have stomach flu, but it is better than a heart murmur.

Take care. There are some nursing homes in our area (middle of PA) experiencing an outbreak of a gastrointestinal "thing" which has affected both residents and staff and led to cautionary notices in local newspapers.
