For lo, [livejournal.com profile] sophiap tagged [livejournal.com profile] theodosia with the Five Songs Meme these many days ago, and lo, Theo did ponder which five songs, out of the hundred and hundreds of dearly beloved songs might be worthwhile to share. Then she got busy, decided to add iTunes to her work computer, re-ripped a couple dozen albums, re-rated almost all of the ripped songs and finally remembered that she'd intended to pick five songs.

Lo, it may be that Theo is a bit overstressed these days.

Yet, here are the five songs that she picked today, on the basis that 1) she likes them very much, 2) she hasn't included them on any of her CD mixes, and 3) they're not particularly well-known or easy to come by.

And lo, they were good (or at least she thought so), and can be downloaded through these:

"Lonelyhearts" by the Atlantics -- local Boston 70s Punk/New Wave band unjustly obscure. They were 10-15 years too soon for the Alternative label.

"Up on the Mountain by the Magnificents. Don't let the fact that this is doo-wop music scare you away. If you look at doo-wop as the bastard offspring of Gospel and Broadway showtunes, it all starts to make so much sense.

"Bad Girl" by the Zakary Thaks. Aside from having one of the all-time great band name, this 60s Texas band rocked like a rocking thing. The Ramones, The Stooges and Green Day only wish they rocked this hard.

"Please Mr. Jailer" from the Cry-Baby soundtrack. Mess of a movie, but some magnificent songs. Slash trivia factoid: the female singer here went on to be one of the producers of Sports Night....

"I Cover The Waterfront" by Billie Holliday. Not one of her most famous, but the best by my taste.

Hope you all enjoy. Let me know if the links have to be renewed....
