snow up to ==here==
Feb. 7th, 2003 11:44 pmIt has snowed and snowed and snowed today, from before I left to work until after I came home. I'd estimate we have about 8 inches here in the city near the coast, I understand that inland they got up to 16 inches! Yikes!
It's very fluffy snow, thank goodness, which makes it much easier to clean off stairs and cars. It's also the kind of snow that sticks to every available surface, so that my front porch railings had at least three inches of snow wherever they had the slightest bit of horizontal surface, and the tops of lampposts had little white caps on them.
Being light snow, it wasn't all that sticky on the ground. On my walk to the subway this morning (which is about 1.33 miles through quiet residential neighborhood and rail trail) I made the mistake of cutting across the grass at one point, forgetting that yesterday, pre-snow, it had been a frozen lake where thaw water had collected. I got about a half dozen steps and all of a sudden I'm making like Bambi on the ice. I guess I can't be too clumsy, because I did manage to keep my footing, but then I was faced with the realization that I'd come too far out to safely go back, so it was slip and slide over to the paved and ice-free footpath.
When I got home I found that my neighbor had very thoughtfully used his snow blower to clear the side walk in front of my house, so that was one chore I didn't have to worry about. The steps to the front door had drifted, but I was able to creep up them where the snow was low, and push enough away with the side of my foot that I could get the porch door open.
My car is still ensconced beneath a considerable shroud... the forecast is for it to be clear tomorrow and Sunday so at some point I'll unearth it, but I'm in no hurry. For once I'm actually fairly stocked up on food and good books and excellent movies, and a whole bunch of Due South tapes, so I really should be able to amuse myself thoroughly this weekend....
