this n' that

A couple of minor things--

1. I'm at page 203 of the Body Swap. At last they're going to have some answers as to why this happened and how to fix it... took 'em damn long enough.

But more could go wrong before All Is Set Right. Mwah-hah-hah. <cue sinister yet whimsical chords>

2. I stayed home sick today, and didn't get much of anything done, aside from updating Quicken with checking account and credit card data. I left the house exactly once, if you can call it that, to go out on the front stoop and check to see if water had frozen outside -- it hadn't. I stayed inside my warm house for the rest of the day, and laid down frequently.

3. Other than that, I watched several episodes of WKRP, and most of Pleasantville for the second day in a row. I've already seen it a number of times, and it just keeps getting better every time -- after having seen Seabiscuit this summer, it was neat to go back and see what the director did here in light of that.

I just am in awe of the concept and execution of this fantasy, and the SFX realization of color/b&w. There are some notable performances here -- especially Joan Allen. But even in minor roles, there are some neat things going on -- I knew that "Riley" and "Jonathan" are all over in this movie in minor roles, but I hadn't realized that Jane Kaczmarek played the protagonist's "real life" mother!

And both William H. Macy and J. T. Walsh have too much damn fun with their roles. Never have the words "Honey, I'm home!" had so much angst associated with them.

4. I also finished watching Monkeybone which I originally put on Sunday morning when I was reading the paper, having meant to try it for quite a while now -- it's got Brendan Goddamn Fraser in it, see? But I wasn't exactly taken with the beginning when I tried to watch it before, and felt the same way this time... but since I was reading the paper and eating, I let it run... and damn, about 20 minutes in or so, it starts to get interesting, with the hero in a coma, and his consciousness in an alternate "cartoon" universe with crazy Tim Burtonesque art direction... and ended up quite getting caught up in it, actually.

Then I went back and watched the opening again. Still kind of repellant, actually, but one of those rare movies where waiting to see if it gets better really pays off.

Also, there's a really funny (and uncredited) cameo by Stephen King! And Chris Kattan as a very funny zombie! Fraser (Brendan, not Benton) cutting very loose and chewing on all the scenery! Dave Foley! And other exclamatory things.

It's no Undercover Brother (another very funny film featuring Chris Kattan) but it's worth a look, as long as you are prepared for it to get better....

5. I got a new pair of shoes on Friday. What was funny is that REI carries the same model of Trail Runner shoes (the Montrail TRS Comp) that I bought two years ago in December, so it was merely a case of trying on the new pair of shoes, ascertaining that they still fit, and then paying for them at the counter. Elapsed time was well under 20 minutes for the whole deal, and I had to wait a few minutes before a hiking-boot-clad salesman could see me!

When I got them home, I compared them side by side with my old Montrails -- yes, exactly the same shoe, just in much better condition. What had really changed about my old shoes from wear was that the botto treads had seriously worn down, especially towards the heels! No wonder they didn't have the same spring that they used to.

6. A big shout-out of thanks to [livejournal.com profile] heuradys for nifty new "Badass" icon here. I've been writing Frannie Vecchio (the character pictured herein) both in a flashfic and right now she's playing a prominent part in the Body Swap story, and I'm in love with the character, she's so much fun to deal with! So the icon comes at a very propitious time!

I'm so hoping to get to work tomorrow....

Sympathies on not feeling well. I can relate. :-( Pushed too hard and total exhaustion attack. A shower was too much work. You know the routine, I'm sure.

Cool on the movies!
