Ten Things I Have Learned From LibraryThing
On the occasion of entering my 801st book in LibraryThing, here's a list of thoughts about it:
1. I don't have as many books as I thought I did -- originally I would have guesstimated 2K, but with a couple shelves to go, I'm only up to 800. This is helped by the fact that I've culled at least 200 books as I've gone, maybe more, but it's still far off.
2. You'd never know by the number of gardening reference books I have how lousy my backyard looks.
3. I now have unread =shelves= and can tell you the precise number of what I haven't read. (100 as of today, sigh)
4. Getting my book 'collection' in order feels like I've gotten my LIFE in control.
5. Getting rid of books actually feels pretty good when you know you're separating out the books that you really care for and shedding the stuff you don't. Also, I haven't thrown any away except for a couple that were damaged beyond hope, they've all gone to BookMooch or a local book charity group.
6. I still have a lot of 50s and 60s SF paperbacks that I inherited from my father (who died in 1969) which I'm going to take special care with.
7. I have more duplicates than I thought, so I'm going to get around to culling them out... soon.
8. I don't know how many plastic tubs of books are still lurking in the basement, so there is the lure of the unknown to keep me from feeling like my cataloging will be "done" soon.
9. I feel kind of relieved that my book addiction has been under successful control otherwise I'd be wandering between tottering piles of books in my house.
10. I didn't know so many things had actual ISBNs, like calendars and a package of Zen Meditation Balls!
