HELP! I need some BSG info!

I'm working on a really spiffy new Battlestar Galactica theory about future plot events based on the last episode, "Maelstrom", but I need some hard input:

Have we ever been told in canon just how skinjob Cylons are created?

(I expect the answer will have heavy spoilers for the episode, so beware.)

We've never been told as far as I know. The whole sequence of events cries out that we are missing important players. 40 years ago, toasters revolted against humans. As far as we know toasters had no religious leanings. Today, monotheistic skin job cylons seem to reign over the toasters. What happened?

Here's my guess. Toasters went out into the universe, and they found the 13th Lord of Kobol - the Lord of Earth. And he told them that he was the only real god. I assume he was somehow involved with the creation of the skinjobs, and helping them to rise to power.

Incidentally, it is possible the skinjob cylons (or at least the ones we see) are renegades, and that the main Cylon civilization is ruled by toasters and has no interest in humanity one way or the other.

It is hard to understand how the skinjobs can have no knowledge of the missing 5 models. It would seem to imply that their knowledge of their own origins is limited.

Thanks for the input -- from the lack of anyone popping up with hard info (and I know for sure there's a bunch of BSG fans on my Flist) I'm feeling much more sure I wasn't napping when something important went past on this issue!

12 seems to be a very important number -- there are 12 colonies, constellations, and Cylon models! So a 13th model (or a Cylon God) would seem to be a right-feeling continuation of that trend, when you consider the humans are searching for a 13th colony....
