These were taken in the bad light of the cellar, so they're not great quality or anything. Still, it gives you an idea of what I was talking about.

Sewing Machine & Scarf
The body (and base) of this old sewing machine is cast-iron, except for the wooden case around it. It's every bit as heavy as it looks. It doesn't have a foot-pedal, but instead has a curved lever that you push with the side of your knee.
To the left is the top of the wooden case, over which I've draped the newest knitted object, a scarf made with goofy sparkly fun-fur, which is intended for my 8yo niece!

Singer Closeup
Closer view of the vintage sewing machine -- see the fancy scroll plate on the front? In the foreground is the fun-fur scarf.
You may just be able to make out the black curve of the control-lever, to the lower right of the picture. The whitish "tape" on the platen next to the needle is ancient masking tape, with lines I drew on it to mark quarter-inch gradations in distance. |

I have my mother's 1948 Domestic brand sewing machine (also with a cast-iron head) in storage up in Massachusetts. One of these days I will have to do something with all that stuff.

When I took Home Ec in 1962/63, our machines had a knee control lever. Sure brings back memories. The rest of the machines did NOT look as old as yours, though. =>}
