Consumerosity Time

[livejournal.com profile] veejane was kind enough last night to take me by the supermarket, so we wandered the aisles of the giant Shaw's in Medford with our shopping carts, happily discussing this n' that and occasionally gently dissing each others choices in groceries. I realized halfway through that I was shopping as though I wouldn't get to a supermarket for the next month or two.

I ended up buying something like $55 worth, though to be sure that included a lot of major staples, since I haven't been in going on a week and a half and stuff that I normally replace sooner is like two weeks overdue. Still for a single person, $55 is a large grocery bill -- I realize those people shopping for several adults and growing children blow through this amount in days.

That amount included $7.99 worth of Clementines, which I think will turn out to be a mistake. The one I ate last night after returning home was below par, frankly. The bag I blew through last week, from Trader Joe's, was far far superior, almost like citrus crack. I'll give one more Clementine in that box a try, but if it also turns out tasteless, I'm going to see about returning them to the store and getting a refund, if I can get up the nerve. (The number of things that I have returned to a store or manufacturer is probably less than ten in my lifetime. I tend to bury (or hand over to charity) my mistakes.)

Of course, I'll have to get over there -- but I'm working on that today, because I'm meeting the cardealerphobia guy at 3:30, to go out and test drive some cars, among them a new Honda Civic (which turns out to be in my price range) and the ::koff:: pre-owned Subaru Forester I was asking about earlier.

So my carlessness could come to an end fairly soon, if all goes well, which would rock for sure. Not that I'll enjoy spending thousands and thousands of dollars for it, but I remind myself that saving up money is something that you do so that you can spend it when the times comes, and I guess the time it has came.

To paraphrase Ted Sturgeon, it's all strings of numbers in little books (or ATM receipts) anyway. :-)

Good luck with the next round of car shopping!

Not long ago the Washington Post had an article warning consumers to guard against inadvertently buying used cars that were flooded during the recent hurricanes (especially Katrina). Seems as if some unscrupulous types dry the cars out and try to sell them up north. Of course they later turn out to have problems due to water damage. So if you are looking at a used car, you might want to check that out.

What is a Clementine?
