Car update

Thanks for all your kind words, they're greatly appreciated this morning. It was starting off so nice, really, and then I made the mistake of walking out the front door....

I talked to the tow guy and evidently the car looks to be in decent condition, except for the steering column which is, in his words, Fubar'd. As in, it won't be startable without a screwdriver. Then I talked to my insurance company, and started the claims process, though that won't start in earnest until the claims adjuster contacts me and sees the car for herself, et cetera.

I then talked to my regular car repair place, and they do steering column replacements, et cetera, all the time ("We've got three of them here right now!") which means that I may well be able to go through them. This comforts me quite a bit, since I trust them -- funny how you cling to something like that, you know?

I've been tending to think of my car as unlikely to be stolen -- how many young car thieves know how to drive standard these days? Evidently the joy-riders in my neighborhood do.

That happened to my '65 mustang, all those years ago....the cretins stole it, joyrided--and then thrashed the engine. The police found the car maybe five blocks from where I lived, but I pretty much had to replace the engine. Oh yes. That was a month after I lost my job and my home.

So you have my sympathies, and may Murphy now be content and move on!

Oh, yes. I do recommend that. My car was never bothered after I put the club on it when I got it back from being repaired. Well, except for someone stealing one lug nut off each wheel. I think that was just the thieves getting back at me because they couldn't steal the whole car again.

Oh my goodness. What a way to start the day!! I am so sorry you're having to deal with that.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through all of this! *hugs*

(But I *am* glad the car was recovered before it got to a "chop shop.")

Yikes!

Oh, dear. I'm so sorry.

(will call soon to talk.)

I'm glad this incident appears to have a good ending.

I'm sorry I missed the initial news this morning. [First week of school and pretty hectic here in the mornings.]

I missed the initial reports as well. Not sure a Club will deter anyone, but the chances are good it was just kids. They will always go for something easier.

I am really sorry.

Was your car in a wreck, too? What happened to the steering column?

Evidently they Fubar'd the steering column to bypass the ignition lock, to expose the wires and/or be able to jam a screwdriver into the mechanism and turn on the starter. All I really know is that the guy at Lil Nates (the tow yard) says that I'd need a screwdriver to start the car. SIGH.
