Heh, you wouldn't think I did anything else this weekend would you? In fact, I really did get a lot done... it's just that =this= is what got pictures, partially because of an aborted attempt to show what was happening to
dxmachina for consultation and advice.
Saggy
Suddenly on Saturday, the stoop floorboards, which had been off-kilter, suddenly sagged alarmingly |
 |
Gappy
From the right -- there are still good boards, but they're not attached. |
 |
Even More Gappy
From the left -- where the gap is severest. Note the good condition of the lumber underneath. |
 |
Blocked up
Note that I've taken a whole bunch of shingles off the front (which was easier than you'd think, since the boards they'd been nailed to were essentially gone), and then carefully stacked concrete blocks as I jacked up the support beam. It's not exactly level, but it is much safer-looking and feeling. |

When you replace the thing, you might want to consider a lattice for the front instead of solid shingles, just to help with moisture control underneath. (They'll probably replace the main bits with pressure treated wood anyway, but every little bit helps.)
