Under the NJ Rainbow!

So we went off to the Hanes factory outlet, which is called the Berkshire store, for some reason. It didn't just have pantyhose, though there was a lot of it -- there were all sorts of underwear, and other clothes. I ended up getting two Champion bras, underwear, socks, four shirts, flip flops and I forget what else, but it came to a pretty big bag's worth, and probably takes care of My Clothing Needs for the rest of the summer if not the year.

Then we stopped by a Rag Shoppe and I got crochet hooks. I brought the Very Large Afghan along, but I neglected to bring the bag that had my hook and my knitting projects in it. Mom made noises about wanting a hat, so I bought some Lion Brand chenille and I'm making her a hat similar (but with larger gauge) to the Gatsby Cloche -- already more than half done tonight!

Then we went to the Macaroni Grill for dinner, which was delicious, and just as we were leaving a mild thunderstorm was sweeping in, trying to fight it out with the sun, which was still shining through most of the downpour. In the car just a little bit later (after a too-long stop at a Harmon discount "health and beauty aids" store) I looked and noticed a huge and bright rainbow! In fact, once we rounded a curve, we could see that it was arc-ing all the way across the sky, a complete and distinct arch that maybe took up a quarter of the horizon! And not only that, there was a faint but definable secondary rainbow above it, also all the way across the sky!

Only the second time in my life that I've seen a secondary rainbow, and here it was in my childhood home -- in fact, we drove all the way back to Cedar Grove (at least 15-20 minutes) and the rainbow hung in there the whole time. I tried to explain to my Mom and her friend that it wasn't hitting the ground in any fixed place, because the optical illusion moves with you as you go, but I don't think it got through.

But since they actually noticed and appreciated the display, I'm not going to quibble with their understanding of the optical science involved. I just feel lucky that we saw a rainbow at all, not to mention such an extraordinary one!

That's a really good double-rainbow sighting. Congrats!

(Just how big is the Very Big Afghan, anyway?)
