Because You (Well, Someone) Asked
It occurred to me that I should share this here, too, since it came up on the Phoenix Board when they were talking about how the New Mutants comic book series went tragically wrong when Louise Simonson took it over... which is an issue near and dear to my heart. Mind you, I respect Simonson deeply as a writer, but I disagreed entirely on the direction she took the series in... so much that I ended up writing up a fairly huge (about 140,000 words) novel that was originally run in X-APA in the late 80s, and that I posted, in serial chapters to rec.arts.comics (or was it rec.arts.comics.xbooks -- had it split off by then, I wonder?) where it was one of the first fanfic stories run there. Anyway, I felt a little emboldened to speak up and admit that I'd written something that might be near and dear to their little hearts, 'cause (IMHO) at its Claremont/Sienkiewicz-fueled height, the New Mutants series was pretty much as good as Buffy the Vampire Slayer has ever been.
Anyway, this is what I wrote below:

Here is a site that links to all the chapters.
I feel constrained to assert that the narrator is not a Mary Sue, I mean, aside from the obvious facts that she does not have ravishing red hair or a great singing voice, she's like way too angsty and neurotic to be perfect. Also there's that problem with the unreliable narration....
There really is quite a bit of pre-NM#52 Magneto here too.
(Note to add: this is a pre-X-Men movie Magneto, who looks a good deal younger than Ian McKellen (being that he was rejuvenated in the canonical character history) whom probably would have been played by Rutger Hauer in the movie-version in my mind back then. Probably now I'd go with Sean Bean....)

--- What is this Kid Dynamo thing? Where can I find it?
Kid Dynamo is a fan-fiction written by once-netter Connie Hirsch, which deals with the New Mutants in the days just after Magneto took over the School (right after New Mutants #52). A very good story by any standards, most people who have read it have granted it automatic status in official Marvel history, vastly preferring it to the eventual rise of Cable and the appearance of X-Force, or at least delaying that inevitable occurrence by including Kid Dynamo.
