Graveyard of the Firefly(s)

Name ten cancelled shows you love(d). Extra credit for those killed before their time. Double extra credit for shows with major queer text/subtext.

1. Futurama -- 4 seasons (well, the third was sliced in two -- sounds familiar, DS fans?) was not enough, The Simpsons ran ten before going bad. And, hey, robosexuals? That counts as queer subtext to me.

2. Firefly We all know the sad tale here, I think. ::rains brimstone on Fox programming execs::

3. WKRP in Cinncinnati Four seasons? Not long enough. It occasionally shows up on the TV Land cable channel, in like weekend 3 AM slots, but two years ago they stripped it for a summer viewing, and I got to watch it straight through for the first time since the 70s. It was every bit as brilliant as I remember, if not more. Plus? Andy/Venus.... No, seriously! (Also, tighter pants than Pros!)

4. Due South They went out in fine style, actually, but this really was a creative team that should have been given more time, damn it!

5. The Tick Either the live action or the animated, or both. And definite queer subtext -- there's even an episode where Arthur comes out to his family about his, er, superherodom....

6. Frank's Place A wonderful comedy that I've written about here before. Early example of non-laughtrack sitcom/dramedy. This makes two of my favorite cancelled series that starred Tim Reid, btw.

7. Wonderfalls ::sobs brokenly::

8. Now and Again Not the nighttime soap (that was Once and Again) but the dark-ish SF series about a regular guy whose brain was transplanted into a super-soldier body -- basically he was given the chance of life in exchange for giving up his family and everything that meant anything to him. Basically once you realize that the meddling doctor was Satan it all made a lot of sense. Loved the wife and kid, too.

9. Dark Angel I really really liked the last 3/4s of the second season, when some of the best producers/creators of DS9 had taken over and began correcting the bad characterization plus adding some cool new characters. Note to self: acquire DVD set of this season ASAP.

10. Beauty and the Beast I loved it all the way through, loved the new female lead they added. I really need to see if this is out on DVD, it would be fantastic to revisit and see if it's as good as I remember.

Also-rans: Andy Richter Controls The Universe, VR.5, The Flash, DS9, Babylon 5, Millennium, Lone Gunmen, Earth 2... this is like the graveyard of cool series, isn't it?

I thought season 3 of Beauty and the Beast had promise, too. They released at least part of the series on VHS, but even though Panser-Davis (of the money-making Highlander merchandise tie-in VHS and DVD empire) bought the rights to BatB, I don't think they ever released dvds. More's the pity.

1 thru 7 most definately. The others I am not certain of.
