Nine Or So Things
1. I put Operation Porch into effect last night and tonight. Set up the tabletop fountain my roommate received as a gift a couple years ago, brought out a candle lantern, and sat next to the screened windows in the semi-dark which was cool and fairly peaceful. Okay, except for the cats yowling in the distance, and tonight there were town fireworks on the other side of the hill... but still, pretty nice.
2. Subsequently, I was able to see an opossum sneaking across my yard in the light cast by the streetlamp across the street. I know it was a possum because there was that familiar moment of "What the hell is THAT? It's not some kind of mutated rat is it?"
3. I also managed to see the little chicken that lives in the backyard of the house down the street -- and confirmed that it was indeed a rooster, because I caught it crowing!
4. We had the most marvelous sky last night near sunset - there was a fine high overcast, linen-colored, and there were faint ripples in it, as though there were rucked-up folds of cloth, fainter grey over the sky grey. So delicate that if I drew it for you, you'd think I was making it up. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.
You should look at the sky as often as you can. You never know what you'll see.
5. I was thinking about the overlap of DS and Firefly fandom, both of which have male pairs who are very easily slashed, yet also have some very strong female characters. The 'fantastic' element is actually stronger on DS, whereas FF deals with easily digested SF elements -- a civil war, far future technology mixed with lower tech and so on.
Which led to to thinking what if FF had been cast with DS actors -- CKR as Mal, PG as Simon, Dean McDermott as Wash, Camilla Scott as Zoe, Ramona Milano as Kaylee, Beau Starr as Book. Which actually might work pretty well -- Simon is the least fitting because of the age, PG could do the crisp doctor pretty well. If you're going to keep River as a fairly young girl, you might have to make her his daughter rather than sister.
And that's when I crash up on the rocks, because there's not that many female characters in DS, and I still have two major roles to fill, plus Jayne... and then I said, why limit it there... we could get somebody like Sarah Polley, or Caroline Dhavernas... and as for Inara, perhaps Molly Parker?
Which leaves Jayne... how about Hugh Dillon?
Seriously, I could see this cast doing a bangup job. Don't get me wrong, I like the casting of the Firefly series just fine... but I could see the talented DS cast originating those roles just as well....
6. You knew I couldn't get through a post without talking about He Who Likes Carrots, didn't you?
7. Still trying to put together some vague description of Down to the Bone and failing utterly, it still leaves me verklempt, but in a good way. I just want to stop for a moment and predict that there will be Bob (Dillon's character) fics when this movie gets a wider distribution than two film festivals. I was speculating on a Persona-like scenario, with Bob (a male nurse) caring for a brain-damaged Joe Mulgrew and ending up involved with Billy Tallent... 'cause Bob, fucked up as he is, is still a lot more positive person than the nearly-late Joe Dick.
Okay, coming back from my happy place....
8. I'm going down to NJ once again for family reunion-type activities so I may not be around much for the three days, depending on telephone access and so on. Which will be periods of extreme boredom (me at Mom's house) interlaced with getting together with a lot of family members I take great joy in and don't see often enough. Back as soon as I can get away on Sunday....

Okay, I love this, because you managed to describe verabatim the thoughts that cross my mind each and every time I see a possum. Too damn funny!
possums
Oppossums have made a big comeback in this area, in part because of the rabies pandemic taking out a lot of raccoons and so on -- possums, being marsupials and thus not in the mammal mainstream, don't get rabies.
Still, they have this curiously unfinished look to them....

I'll be grinning all day because of this *g*

I was thinking some more on the casting myself... what's her name that played Victoria would do a fine Saffron, or else she could be Inara, because she'd be just as good in a good role and we don't have to limit ourselves to what they played in DS... hmmm. :-)

Recasting films, TV shows, etc. is great fun.

And the idea of CKR as Mal and Hugh as Jayne is fucking fantastic! That little scene end scene in Aeriel could be turned into something ever so fantastic!

If I didn't know your city, and how closely spaced the houses are, I'd think you lived next to a farm in a totally rural area! :-)

It's just SO bizarre to be walking down my street and see a chicken -- okay, a really TEENY chicken -- sitting on top of a fence....
