Hugh Dillon Likes Carrots
... well, no, I don't know that. It's just that among my Buffista buds, there's been some mild spoofing of the kind of relationship obsessiveness where every topic of possible conversation is somehow connected to the object of one's affection -- so if say, the group is talking about raw vegetables, the obsessed one is likely to add "Bob likes carrots!" as their contributions.
So, I've been kind of on a Hugh Dillon kick this past week, thus the title. It's not altogether my fault, it's just that I got my hands on a videotape of interviews and appearances by Dillon/The Headstones this weekend and
heuradys was kind enough to tape the two Degrassi episodes that Dillon guest-starred in, so I've had those to watch, too.
(I actually squeeed a little bit, but luckily it was so high-pitched that only the neighborhood dogs were bothered.)
Dillon is an interesting guy, well-spoken and quick-witted in interviews. He co-starred in Hard Core Logo, which is probably what he's best known for in the U.S., and he's currently pursuing an acting career. In Canada, I gather he's much more well-known for his band, The Headstones -- is it true they've had gold records there? (Maybe I was misconstruing what an interviewer said, can somebody confirm?)
It's been fun to watch Dillon as himself -- the only previous things I've seen him in are HCL -- where he really is playing a character (partly you can tell he's acting because he evidently curses less than usual) -- and Lone Hero which is an awfully bad film redeemed by a couple scenes in which his biker character has lines to speak. (And when he opens his mouth it's evident that he's got the IQ of the rest of the bikers added together....)
(Note to self, now I have to listen to the HCL commentary again, since Dillon is one of the speakers.)
Dillon has had a lot of substance abuse issues, which he is willing to talk about, though I don't know if does him much good -- he strikes me as a highly verbal and smart person who is unfortunately going to be able to run logical rings around most mental health counselors. That's not a good thing when you need somebody to help you see that you're in denial, or to catch you out in lies. Being an addict and a good natural actor who can look his or her best friend in the eye and believably swear they're not using is not a good recipe for success over a drug problem.
Dillon is obviously bothered by his drug problems, which is what gets me. In one of the interviews he says that admitting to a drug problem is not the same as getting over it, the craving doesn't magically go away like on a TV show. A lot of the lyrics of his songs deal with inner darkness and anger and self-hate, which is a piquant contrast to the straight-ahead hard rock music the Headstones play.
The Degrassi episodes were interesting, since Dillon plays a successful yuppie surgeon father who abuses his teenage son -- a very buttoned-down persona, such a contrast to the punk rocker and biker he's played before, with a core of violence that's occasionally simmering in his eyes.
Once I finish the Headstones tape (it's huge, it goes on forever...), I'll probably be over my Hugh Dillon Likes Carrots fixation, but it was fun while it lasted. I remember back to being a teenager obsessing over Iggy Pop, I guess not much has changed....

Or not bothering to lie at all and just expecting the friend to get the fuck over it ...
The lyrics to Headstones songs are incredible -- "walking hand in hand with my addiction" is pretty blatant, but there's a lot of more symbolic/metaphoric stuff too. I get some strange looks at work when I've got Picture of Health on the CD player, but (as Hugh would say), fuck 'em. Good music.
And evidently Hugh's going to be playing a preacher in what looks like a very scary movie -- I'm kind of torn. I don't have access to Degrassi, and the only times I've seen him on the screen were HCL and the teeny parts he's had in Twitch City etc.

Ouch, I hear that. Bought the t-shirt, walked out on a relationship and didn't look back.
I'd be happy to lend you the Degrassi tape! Let me know addressy info and I can send!
Yeah, the Ginger Snaps prequel -- I recently watched the movie, which was unusually female-positive and smartly made for a horror movie. That trailer looks like it will be a blend of The Howling and Black Robe.
