Anniversary Party
Before I forget...
I just want to commemorate my one-year anniversary on Live Journal! I'm not good with remembering "special dates" since my weirdly-innumerate brain just doesn't hold onto numbers. If I hadn't run across the date in my info page the other day, I'd have missed it entire... it woudl be about February 15th and I'd be sayign to myself, wasn't I getting on LJ around this time last year?
But I was. My Buffista pals had a number of people with blogs that I read from time to time, and I'd kept a newsgroup up at GEnie since 1992 or thereabouts, switching it over to SFF.Net after GEnie was taken down by its Evile Corporate Masters, so the idea of keeping a semi-public open diary wasn't all that strange to me.
(If you count apazines as blogs -- they're sort of like that, only with a monthly or bi-monthly schdule they're a lot slower -- I've been doing this sort of thing since 1984.)
Anyway, checking up on some of my Buffista friends was most of my impulse, but also -- somebody whose name I totally forget now had written a good and long essay about Mary Sues, and when I innocently went and read it, I was really rather pleasantly surprised to find Kid Dynamo singled out as an Original Character (first person viewpoint, no less) fic that wasn't a Mary Sue at all, despite many of the traditional trappings.
That just about made my year right there, really. It's been at least 15 years since I started writing that story (which took 3 years to finish -- you think you've been waiting long for Body Swap?) but it's still near and dear to my heart the way most first loves are.
So I begged for an LJ code from a Buffista friend (and I'm totally blanking on it -- was it
sophiap?
debg?
dxmachina? Whoever, my sincerest thanks once again!) and started into the rounds -- now I could take part in that. I scouted around and slowly connected with online fandom outside of my little Buffista puddle.
And then
ds_flashfiction happened, and I was just rediscovering the pleasures of writing fanfiction again when I came across the inaugural week of that. Started reading and responding, started 'meeting' the people whose writing there (and in some cases, the authors of fan fiction stories that I'd intensely admired) and before I knew it I had a new time sinkhobby to take up my waking hours and I was just flying along.
And along the way, I've reconnected with some online friends that I hardly see any more, like
janni and
malkingrey and
kathlaw and many more.
So all in all it's been a very good year indeed. I'm coming out of it with a lot of enjoyable writing time, and the wonder of stories that have reached out and touched people, and that is no small thing. I'm also in a generally better headspace than I was in last year. I'm looking forward to finishing the Body Swap story and getting on with the next big project, whatever it is.
In other news, Yum Yum is sleeping the sleep of the furry and well-fed next to me tonight. My roommate R was able to obtain special food for her that, for a wonder, she actually seems to like. I'm feeling hopeful about her situation again....

And yeah, it's nice getting back in touch with old friends from the GEnie days. Odd somehow that you and I got here one week apart. :-)
That's great news on YumYum! Yay!
