Cat Stuff

Question -- does anybody know a good bulletin board for feline health questions. We've got Yum Yum on the special kidney failure food from Science Diet... but she doesn't seem to much care for it, and is only eating very small amounts (lack of appetite is also a kidney failure problem). I need to find either a different formulation of the special food or I don't know what. She's seriously in danger of starving to death.

I don't have a link for a good cat related bulletin board, but my parent's cat Stretch is on a special formula diet for kidney failure. When I'm home tomorrow I can check what kind of food he is on(I don't think it's Science Diet, he's also 16 or 17 now...)

i used to ask questions on newsgroups rec.pets.cats or something close to that.

when some of my elder cats have been ill and had no appetite, my vet gave me some high calorie food that stank to high heaven, was expensive but got the cats eating again.

also, baby food often works. get the first stage food & make sure it doesn't have onion powder added or too much salt. my cats like the lamb the best.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that! Jim fed Turbo baby food, too, and it worked sometimes. Neither of our cats would touch liver, but it's good for a try if ground up or chopped fine. The stinkier, the better -- smell really encourages hunger for cats. Actually, our vet advised onion powder because apparently a lot of cats like it! Why not onion powder? she asked. (I'm sure I'll have another cat with kidney disease, if they live long enough)

dunno why, no onion powder was the advice I got. but then I told my vet I was mixing the baby food w/ the oil or water from cans of tuna. maybe she thought onion powder was overkill. :)

There are several brands, or you might try dry instead of wet or vice versa. Did the vet tell you to mix the new with the old in the beginning?

We've had two cats with kidney problems, and part of it depends on how sick they are. If they're already very sick . . . well, let's just say that I fed the Girl Cat anything she would eat at the end, which meant Doritos (she always loved Mexican, she was the only animal I ever saw that would lick salsa off a plate) and the warm crumbled-up hamburger patties out of Whoppers. I fried Turbo chicken breasts.

It may help to inject Yum Yum with fluids. They always feel better after that.

Dr. Foster and Smith are plugging their own products, or rather, their merchandise, but there's a good selection and good info. My friend who dates a vet referred me to it, if that counts as a rec.

Friends with a cat with thyroid issues inject fluids and say he's much happier afterwards, so, ditto from above. You can buy the fluids direct from D F&S.

Towards the end Mouse got baby food and tuna. NOne of our cats have ever liked canned cat food. They push it towards the litter box, then kick litter over it.

Hugs for Yum Yum. And for Theo.
