Success!

Well, I had one eventual success today -- I finally got the mood icon set that [livejournal.com profile] aurianrose created for Due South to work. Her instructions were perfect, in fact... but when I went to FTP them onto my website I ran into a bizarre problem -- I spent almost an hour this morning before work trying to get my laptop to FTP them. My ISP has personal web pages that heretofore I've only used their interface to load the few images I've referenced here -- one at a time. The icon set has 114 files in all, so one by one wasn't going to do it.

Bizarrely, no matter what program I tried, I couldn't get at the file location. I could see from the interface that my username and password were being accepted. So I called up the ISP, talked to a customer service rep who couldn't do much more than acknowledge that I was entering the right stuff, so I got passed to their online chat function. Same story pretty much there, though at least they talked me through using the IE interface... only that didn't work either!

I hadn't known that you could FTP right in IE... except that it wasn't actually working. Finally the tech suggested that there must be a setting on the laptop that was preventing it. Which I usually think is a bullshit CSR excuse, but it was getting time to leave for the day, so I signed off the chat, got dressed, and just as I was about to leave the house, I tried on a whim to use the same FTP settings on my iMac, which is also connected to the cable modem.

And wouldn't you know, it was ALSO working from my desktop machine at work? So I called the Help Desk, and after explaining that yes, I was trying to upload my own files, no I'm not expecting to be helped with that, I just want to know what I'm supposed to do if I have to FTP something for work (and yes, there are legitimate circumstances where I might have to do that!) it was grudgingly admitted that yes, the laptops have a setting (not specified) that prevents FTP from connecting. (I'm betting it's responsible for some other odd connection problems I've had to work my way around.)

I'm half-tempted to call up the ISP CSR whom I bitched (lightly) at and apologize, because for bloody once it actually WASn't the ISP's fault that something didn't work.

Anyway, tonight I was finally able to upload all of my DS mood icons (thank you once again, [livejournal.com profile] aurianrose!!!) and follow the other instructions, all of which worked, and tra-la, I have a new, neat set of spiffy mood icons that have already started appearing. I liked the mice ones a whole lot, but these are even cooler....

I'm so glad you finally got it working! :o) I'm glad the instructions were clear, as I was a little worried about them...
