Traveling in more ways than one

I met up for brunch with [livejournal.com profile] llennhoff and [livejournal.com profile] malkaesther yesterday for brunch before packing up to drive down to PA for family duties with my Mom, only to find out that [livejournal.com profile] llennhoff was planning to take the Fung Wah Bus ('Fung Wah' is Chinese for 'Catches on Fire Regularly!' or so I've heard) back down to NJ so he could be in for work tomorrow, so it eventually dawned on us all that I could give him a ride instead.

So my leisurely packing turned into hurried packing, but I don't seem to have missed anything too important, and then I had the benefit of a long drive that was much more fun than usual because of the companionship. We spent a lot of time arguing with the TomTom I'm giving my mom, because it kept wanting to put us back on 95 when the Merritt Parkway was the clear choice, and so on.

I wish there was a function for "Never Ever Choose The George Washington Bridge" as a permanent preference. You would think it was a homing device or something! We pretty quickly figured out how to silence the faithful little electronic voice which every time we passed an exit that would get us over to 95, would sulk a little as we flew by it and then brightly chirp up about the NEXT exit.

But eventually I did drop him off and head on to PA -- tomorrow is a Big Family Reunion Thing at my Aunt's on the Jersey shore so the clan is gathering and all. It doesn't hurt that my mom's Independent Living Community condo has lots of central AC.

Along with the preparations for the trip, I was poking at ideas about what classes I should take this fall, and was checking out the Harvard Extension School courses and programs. There's a Certificate program that you can complete in 8 courses, and it's possible to get a Masters, too. Unfortunately, the courses run around $1700 per, but since it would be spread out -- and I can probably find work that will pay for related education, I may go with it, at least for the first three that you have to take before they'll let you formally enroll.

You have the option of taking them long-distance, too. I'm well within commuting distance, but it would be nice to go home directly on nights I'm not feeling well!

Some devices have a way to mark a street as closed. A friend of mine managed to mark all of Manhattan as closed.
