i will be so glad when the week is over, and it's only tuesday....

My day started out nicely enough, especially because I didn't feel all that bad in the morning, and when I got into work I launched into my next task in the realignment, and made real progress in gettign a handle on what individual schools have to be reslotted back into the districts they came from.

But then Byron came by and falsely-heartily told Harry and I that he had a data entry job for us. Note: we are application programmers. I'm not complaining on the basis that data entry tasks are beneath me, since I've done plenty of them in my day, but if you pay people to be programmers you're pretty much wasting all that trained manpower when you assign them to typing tasks... SIGH.

But given that Byron's been tasked to get the data into this damned Documentum application, and the only people he has are us... and evidently the import facility in Documentum is, like, non-existent so it pretty much has to be done by hand... Harry and I will be making like trained monkeys for the rest of the week.

I wouldn't mind so much but when we have the tools/applications AND personnel to take something like the data setup for this project and turn it into a spiffy Notes database that we would be able to import the data he has to add... it's not just "if you have a hammer" snobbery on my part, either, as the Documentum E-Room interface is really terrible, and inputting just one of these entries means you have to redraw the web screen something like 8 or 9 times (because if it's not a drop-down, you have to open up a popup, only the popup opens up a new screen, some of which have choices that run two or three full screens down before you get to the choices you need to add in).

Even if they just gave me the Documentum manual and an hour or two, I could come up with a better and more logical screen setup for the damn task.

Figuring that I may be able to finish an entry every four minutes, it will take me a minimum of 20 hours to go through the rest of the entries I've been given. That's without breaks and stuff, and also that I don't run into technical difficulties.

It's goign to be a long week. Thank god I have Friday off.

At a drug company I worked at, they bought Documentum to store their drug specifications. It was so hard to enter the data into Documentum, though, that eventually they just scanned in their existing hard copy and stored the scans in Documentum.

I'm reading backwards and just got to this. ARgh, just argh. And, well, at least you didn't have to do all the data entry first.
